Beschreibung:

Benjamin Maund, editor (1791-1864) The Botanic Garden, consisting of ... representations of hardy ornamental flowering plants cultivated in Great Britain . London: Simpkin & Marshall, Sherwood and Co., 1825 [but ?1834]-1837. Volumes I-IX part one in 10 volumes, 4° (221 x 175mm). 10 engraved additional titles, engraved dedication in volume III, 202 hand-coloured engraved plates only (of 204) by S. Watts after Mrs. E. Bury, Eliza Maund, S. Maund Mills and E.D. Smith. (Lacking 2 plates in vol. IV, some frontispieces and additional titles offset or lightly browned, the plate illustrating figures 153-156 soil-marked, lacking some preliminaries including the index in vol. IX.) Contemporary uniform green half morocco, marbled edges (spines and corners rubbed, upper board of vol. VI damaged at lower corner). Four plants are shown on each plate, and each plate is accompanied by four leaves of descriptive text, the work appearing on a monthly basis in an eventual total of 13 volumes (enlarged to 18 by 5 supplements). The early volumes were evidently reprinted during the lifetime of the periodical, as is the case with the present set where one plate in volume I is watermarked 1834 and a number of plates in volume III are watermarked 1831. Dunthorne 198; Great Flower Books p. 85; Nissen BBI 2222; Stafleu and Cowan 5712. (10)
