BENJAMIN MAUND (1790-1864, editor) The Botanic Garden . London: Simpkin and Marshall, Sherwood and Co., 1826-1836. Volumes I-VIII (all published), large 8 (222 x 171mm). Engraved title-pages, 767 (of 768) FINE HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES. (Lacking plate 1, some very light spotting to a few leaves only, engraved title-pages spotted.) 20th-century green morocco, single gilt fillet to covers, spines in six cmpartment with raised bands, crowns blocked in gilt in three, lettered in gilt in three, lettered at foot 'Special Edition', gilt turn-ins, gilt edges, by Zaehnsdorf. A FINE, POSSIBLY UNIQUE, COPY OF THE SO-CALLED 'SPECIAL CROWN EDITION'. In this edition each plate is given a separate page whereas in the first edition the engravings are four to a page. Surrounding each engraving is a decorative engraved border with a crown above, a visual pun on the edition and the paper size, and numbered below. The hand-colouring in this edition is particularly fine and some of the plates are heightened with gum arabic. Benjamin Maund was a botanist, florist, some-time bookseller, chemist, and publisher, and an enthusiastic gardener, active until the early 1850s in Worcestershire. This edition not in Stafleu & Cowan or Nissen. (8)
