BELLASIS, George Hutchins. Views of Saint Helena . London: John Tyler, 1815. Oblong 2° (320 x 380mm). 6 numbered hand-coloured aquatints by Robert Havell after Bellasis, printed by W.B. McQueen. Text printed on rectos only. (Title partially browned at margin, some light spots on text leaves, first plate soiled on verso, plates 4-6 lightly soiled at lower margin.) Original printed wrappers (rebacked in cloth, some tears, crude repairs to verso of front wrapper, disbound), 20th-century box with morocco label. Provenance : Moncure Biddle (armorial bookplate on box). THE EARLIEST VIEWS OF ST HELENA recorded in Abbey, executed by Bellasis during eight months' residence on the island, and published shortly before the arrival of Napoleon. The dedication is to the Duke of Wellington who has restored 'the peace and liberties of Europe' and made the island 'an object of interest to the whole world.' Plate 3 'represents St. James's Town,' with 'the Briars, the intended residence of Bonaparte,' visible at the head of the valley. Abbey Travel I, 309; Tooley 87.
