BELL, John. Observations on Italy . Edinburgh: William Blackwood & London: T. Cadell, 1825 (239 x 180mm.). 4°. 9 engraved plates after the author and Gherardi. Plate list at end. (Some spotting and slight dampstaining to plate margins, some pencil scoring of text.) Contemporary half roan (spine rubbed). Provenance : Elizabeth Gibson the Spittal (contemporary ownership inscription to dedication leaf). FIRST EDITION. John Bell (1763-1820), the great Edinburgh surgeon, went abroad for the sake of his health in 1817 after a fall from his horse, and spent the last 3 years of his life in Italy. His notes on painting, statuary, architecture and life in general were edited by Bishop Sandford of Edinburgh and published after his death in this work which Garrisson calls "the finest book of travel ever written by a physician." A second edition was published in 1835 and an Italian translation in 1828. Pine-Coffin 817 8 . GILLY, William Stephen. Narrative of an Excursion to the Mountains of Piemont in the year 1823 . London: for C. and J. Rivington, 1825. 8° (217 x 125mm). 2 folding lithographed maps and 3 plates of facsimile manuscripts. (One map affected by deep but clean tear, some soiling to B1.) Contemporary diced calf (spine rubbed, joints slightly cracked). Second edition. cf. Pine-Coffin 823 2 . GILLY, William Stephen. Waldensian Researches during a second visit to the Vaudois of Piemont . London: for C. J. G. and F. Rivington, 1831. 8° (226 x 136mm). 12 lithographed plates including frontispiece. 2 maps, one folding, and folding facsimile letter. (One plate spotted, another torn at inner margin, some marginal spotting.) Modern boards, uncut. Provenance : "Country Books Club" (circulating library label to front blank with printed list of members and manuscript entries for dates received and sent away). FIRST EDITION. This journey was made in 1829. Pine-Coffin 829 1 . With 11 other volumes, including the third edition of Gilly's Narrative , and large paper copies of Thomas Roscoe's The Tourist in Switzerland and Italy (London, 1830) and The Tourist in Italy (volume I, London, 1831).
