BELCHER, Edward, Sir. The Last of the Arctic Voyages; Being a Narrative of the Expedition in H.M.S. Assistance... in Search of Sir John Franklin During the Years 1852-53-54 . London: Lovell Reeve, 1855.
BELCHER, Edward, Sir. The Last of the Arctic Voyages; Being a Narrative of the Expedition in H.M.S. Assistance... in Search of Sir John Franklin During the Years 1852-53-54 . London: Lovell Reeve, 1855. 2 volumes, tall 8 o (242 x 154 mm). Half-titles. 4 maps (3 folding) and 36 lithographed plates (15 colored). (Some occasional pale spotting.) Modern half morocco, marbled boards, edges stained red. Provenance : S. Barbet (discreet blind-stamp on half-titles). FIRST EDITION. This voyage was the last officially sent in search of Sir John Franklin who disappeared during an Arctic expedition in 1845. However, Belcher, in his narrative, offers no conclusion to the fate of Franklin and his men, nor to the existence of the Northwest Passage to the Pacific. Belcher's expedition proved unsuccessful in many ways, including his abandonment of four ships icebound in Wellington Channel in August 1854, and served as his last active service. Abbey Travel 645; Arctic Bibliography 1241; Hill 106; NMM 921; Sabin 4389; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 3409. (2)
