FIRST EDITION OF THE COMPLETE SERIES OF IMPORTANT STUDIES FROM BELCHER'S VOYAGE ABOARD THE SULPHUR . Appointed to the Sulphur in November 1836, Belcher and his crew surveyed the west coasts of both North and South America before being called back to England via the western route in 1839. After arriving in Singapore in 1840, Belcher was called back to China because of the war, and the Sulphur became actively engaged the following year in operations on the Canton River. Belcher and his crew finally returned to England in 1842, almost seven years after beginning their expedition. The Zoology , authored by J.E. Gray, John Gould and J. Richardson was originally published in 12 parts, and the Botany was published in 6 parts with descriptions by George Bentham.
