Woods after H.G. Hine, additional title, and 12 plates, woodcut illustrations. Provenance : Janie Popperwell Nov r. 17th 1864 (inscription on flyleaf). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN BOOK FORM. Bitting p.32. Henry VIZETELLY (1820-1894). A History of Champagne with Notes on the other Sparkling Wines of France . London: Vizetelly & Co., 1882. 4° (265 x 207mm.) Title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette. Frontispiece and 5 plates, colour-printed folding map, woodcut illustrations. Mid-20th-century crushed purple morocco gilt by Bayntun (Riviere), the covers with gilt borders, board edges and turn-ins, the spine gilt in compartments, titled in 2 compartments and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated in gilt, gilt edges (spine lightly faded). FIRST EDITION. A FINELY-BOUND COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF MRS BEETON'S HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT . 'There are many pointers to the reason for [ Household Management 's] astonishing popularity, chief of which were undoubtedly its ease of reference, its clarity of instruction, and its ability to answer questions on every conceivable aspect of household management and domestic affairs' (Quayle Old Cook Books p.225). Another element of the book which may have made it attractive were the bright and clear colour plates, which make it, as Bitting notes, 'one of the earliest cookery books using colored illustrations'. Quayle distinguishes two issues of the first edition: the first with the publisher's address given on the additional title as '18, Bouverie St London. E.C.' (as here), and a second, later, issue with the address amended, following the company's move to 248 The Strand in 1861. (2)
