Beeton (Isabella)
MRS. BEETON'S HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT
A Complete Cookery Book with sections on The Housewife, Household Work, Servant's Duties, Labour-saving, Laundry Work, Etiquette, Marketing, Carving and Trussing, The Art of "Using-up", Household Hints, Table Decoration, The Home Doctor, The Nursery, The Home Lawyer, etc.
Published: Ward, Lock & Co., Limited, London and Melbourne, 1949 (undated)
xvi plus 1680pp plus 14pp Ads. Leather lookalike impregnated cloth spine over water-resistant impregnated cloth boards. With 16 plates in colour and nearly 350 illustrations. Mrs. Beeton's is the only cookery book to have survived two World Wars and emerged at the end with its indispensability unaffected. Periods of stringent rationing, far from detracting from its value, have merely served to emphasize its fundamental strength and it's adaptability to all conditions. This New Edition is the first post war example of the kind of 'rationing' mentioned, in that the pre-war editions of 1939 and earlier had 32 Chromolithograph plates and nearly 700 illustrations. Some grubby marks to grey boards, text-block edges browned, end-papers are toned with light damp-staining to edges. The rest of the contents are clean through. A very good, clean, tight and solid copy. Perhaps one of the finest testimonies to this book has to be the following by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in his great study of married life, entitled 'A Duet, with an occasional Chorus,' makes his heroine say - 'Mrs. Beeton must have been the finest housekeeper in the world. Therefore, Mr. Beeton must have been the happiest and most comfortable man'; and his hero concludes, that 'this book has more wisdom to the square inch than any work of man' - a wonderful testimonial when one remembers that the last edition thus praised contains more than 80,000 square inches of closely packed information." From the Preface. Binding Condition: Very good Overall Condition: Very good Size: 214mm x 140mm x 95mm
