BEECHEY, Frederick W. (1796-1856). A Voyage of Discovery Towards the North Pole, Performed in His Majesty’s Ships Dorothea and Trent Under the Command of Captain David Buchan R.N., 1818 . London: Richard Bentley 1843. The first edition , an attractive copy . The young Beechey served as second-in-command to John Franklin aboard the Trent as Franklin and Buchan attempted to cross the Arctic to Asia. Arctic Bib. 1230; Hill 97; Sabin 4329. Octavo (222 x 138mm). 6 engraved plates including the frontispiece and 2 folding plates; folding map in upper cover pocket (mild toning, short closed tears and a little creasing to folding plates but internally fresh). Original blue cloth, spine gilt, uncut (recased, some sunning). Provenance : John Ayshford Wise (British MP, 1810-1865; bookplate) – A.E. Kidner (ownership inscription dated 1909 on half-title) – High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
