Binding : contemporary German blind-tooled sheep over unbevelled wooden boards (Jena, Fabeltier workshop), covers with ruled panels, compartments with repeated parakeet tool (see Schwenke-Sammlung 310:29), Fabeltier tool (109:30) and rosettes, brass corner-pieces and fish scale decorated catches, remnants of leather index tabs (spine ends renewed, lacking one clasp). Provenance : EVS[EBIUS] (early lettering on fore-edge [see below]) -- some early marginalia -- Reiffenstein, 1639 (written inside initial P at beginning of first work [see below] -- Berlin, Royal Library (stamps) -- "K.B." (stamp on rear pastedown) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Philip C. Duschnes) -- donated to SMS 9 December 1947. FIRST EDITION of one of the foundation works of English history and the most important work of "the greatest English historian" (PMM). Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum was completed in 731, and is a primary source for early English history, given Bede's meticulous care in collecting accurate information and distinguishing historical fact from hearsay and tradition. It is a rich source for literature and music, and the work includes the only authentic fragment from the writings of Caedmon (fl. 670), one of the earliest English poets. "This book helped establish the custom of counting years from the birth of Christ" (PMM). In addition, the Historia ecclesiastica Bede outlines the importance of music in the deveopment of the English church, discussing the introduction of chant into England by missionaries, and detailing the role of music in celebrating the liturgy. Eggestein's edition bears no printed date, but from a rubricator's note in the Wloclawek copy (also bound with its companion work Eusebius' Historia ecclesiastica ) it can be dated not after 1475. BMC I, 71 (IB.775-775a); CIBN B-195; GW 3756; H *2732; Harvard/Walsh 102; PMM 16; Goff B-293. [ Bound following :] EUSEBIUS Caesariensis (ca 260 - ca 340). Historia ecclesiastica . Latin translation by Rufinus Aquileiensis. [Strassburg: Heinrich Eggestein, ca 1475]. Chancery 2 o . Collation : [1-7 1 0 8 6 (2+1) 9 8 10-13 1 0 14 4 ]. 129 leaves. Large initial rubricated on fo. 1 r , initials at beginning of each book supplied in red and blue, smaller initials, chapter numbers and capital strokes in red. Fo. 1 r ruled in brown. (Fo. 1 soiled with some marginal worming, some minor marginal staining.) With the misprint "Ensebij" for "Eusebij" corrected. The dating of this edition of Eusebius varies: GW date it not after 1475, while Goff and BSB.Ink date it ca 1475-80. The rubrication and decoration matches the Eggestein Bede with which it is bound, and would therefore suggest it dates from the same time (in or before 1475). BMC I, 73 (IB.788); GW 9435; Harvard/Walsh 98; HC(Add) *6708; Pr 289; Goff E-125. A FINE STRASSBURG SAMMELBAND IN A CONTEMPORARY JENA BINDING FROM THE FABELTIER WORKSHOP.
