An Arabian Tale, from an unpublished manuscript: with notes critical and explanatory.
London: Printed for J. Johnson 1786. 8vo (197 x 122 mm.). Contemporary English calf, covers with narrow border of Greek key pattern, spine in six compartments with five raised bands and a small circle and sun ray ornament in each, Greek key gilt roll on turn-ins, violet endpapers, g.e. Almost certainly bound for Beckford. Condition : Binding broken and worn, both covers detached, spine defective. Small marginal stain to last third of book, slight foxing, small tear in B5 repaired but touching a word. Provenance : Beckford, inscription to Scott and shelf Mark "779" in ink on pastedown and facing blank page; A.J. Scott engraved bookplate and pencil signature; Bibliothèque de Fuial, pencil inscription on flyleaf; unnamed consignor, Sotheby's London, 18 December 1986, Lot 16, £500, Quaritch. first edition in english [preceded by Lausanne and Paris editions respectively, in French]. presentation copy inscribed "To the revd. Mr. Scott from the Author" in Beckford's hand. Fly-title A3 and errata leaf A4, lacking final blank leaf. Rothschild 354.
