BECKFORD, Peter (1740-1811). Thoughts on Hunting. In a Series of Familiar Letters to a Friend . Salisbury: E. Easton, 1781. 4° (210 x 166mm). Engraved frontispiece by Bartolozzi after Cipriani, engraved plate and plan of a kennel at the end, half title. (A few leaves very lightly browned.) UNCUT IN ORIGINAL BOARDS, paper label on spine (lightly rubbed), folding cloth box. Provenance : G. Mason (lightly deleted) alias H. Perin (contemporary inscription on an endpaper). FIRST EDITION OF THIS FOX AND HARE HUNTING CLASSIC. The author was a scholar as well as sportsman, and according to Sir Egerton Brydges could 'bag a fox in Greek, find a hare in Latin, inspect his kennels in Italian, and direct the economy of his stables in exquisite French' (see Cambridge History of English and American Literature , vol. London: Vernor and Hood, 1796. 8° (210 x 120mm). 20 engraved plates by Scott, Cook, Howitt and others. (Light browning and spotting, one plate caption shaved.) Sprinkled calf gilt by Roger de Coverly, gilt edges (extremities rubbed). A finely-illustrated edition of the previous work. Schwerdt I, p. 56; and 2 later editions of the same (1810 and [1820]).
