Engraved title-page in each volume, 106 engraved plates and one folding map (some occasional minor spotting and staining). Contemporary straight-grained green morocco gilt, spines gilt, edges gilt (spines slightly darkened). FIRST EDITION of Beatties scenic views of Swiss sites including Castle of Granson, Lausanne, regions along the Rhine, and the Abbey if Einsiedeln. [ With: ] COCKBURN, Major James Pattison (ca 1779-1847). Swiss Scenery . London: T. Davison for Rodwell and Martin, 1820. 4 o (270 x 184 mm). Engraved title, engraved vignette on verso of last leaf, and 60 engraved plates E. Goodall, C. Heath J. Lewis R. Wallis, C. Westwood and others after drawings by Cockburn. (Some offsetting from plates onto text leaves). Contemporary green half morocco, marbled boards, front cover with central morocco label with title gilt-lettered, spine gilt, by Charles Murton (boards rubbed, some wear along joints). SFirst Edition. As a cadet at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, Cockburn studied under Paul Sandby and became an accomplished watercolorist. During leave from his military duties, he would travel and create drawings of continental scenery using a camera lucida to ensure exactness of landscape detail. These finely executed plates include views of Geneva, Lausaunne, Berne, Interlaken, and Lucerne. (3)
