BEARDSLEY, Aubrey (1872-98, illustrator) -- ARISTOPHONES (?448-380 BC). The Lysistrata of Aristophones now first wholly translated into English [by Samuel Smith], London: [Leonard Smithers], 1896. 4° (294 x 230mm). Half title, 8 plates on lightly tinted paper by Aubrey Beardsley. (Marginal tear to one text leaf, some very light mainly marginal staining to text.) Original paper-backed blue boards, printed label on upper cover (extremities rubbed, some light staining and ink spotting mainly to lower cover, a few light scuff marks, corners bumped). NUMBER 4 OF 100 COPIES, the limitation stated in manuscript, as usual. FIRST EDITION ILLUSTRATED BY BEARDSLEY. Lasner 107; Ray 318. "Beardsley had studied Greek vase painting in 1894 at the British Museum, and the Lysistrata drawings reflect something of the Greek vase spirit, including the bawdiness, without perhaps much of the spontaneity of Greek draughtsmanship. The absence of backgrounds, as in the Salome illustrations, makes the designs of closed outlines and bold dots and rare decorated blacks, all the more dramatic." (Reade's Aubrey Beardsley , New York, 1967, pp.360-361.)
