Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Batty (1789-1848) served with the Grenadier Guards in the Peninsular War, in the Pyrenees, and at the Battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1822 and toured the continent from 1822 to 1833 painting landscapes, some of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. He published several volumes of engraved European views including Italian Scenery (1820), French Scenery (1822), Scenery of the Rhine, Belgium and Holland (1826), and Hanoverian and Saxon Scenery (1829).
