Beschreibung:

Basil Blackshaw HRHA RUA (1932-2016) Fraser Island Gouache on paper, 112 x 76cm (44 x 30'') Signed Provenance: With Tom Caldwell Galleries, Belfast. Fraser Island, off Australias eastern Queensland coast, is the world's largest sand island, stretching over 120km. Panoramic viewpoints include Indian Head, a rocky outcrop on the island's easternmost tip, and the Cathedrals, a cliff famous for sculpted ribbons of coloured sand. Blackshaw, whose first marriage was to Anna Ritchie, an Australian painter working in Ireland, visited her home country to visit his daughter in 1990. He noted later that he didnt like Australia much and found people offhand and unfriendly, but he had made one splendid train journey of about 700 miles. The carriages had been primitive, the seats had numbers chalked all over them and the doors hung loose, but it had been worth it for one magnificent vista of some hills by dawn. The present work, Fraser Island, is from Blackshaws Australia Series which was inspired by this trip.
