BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (c.1635-1700, artist). Recueil de peintures antiques trouvées à Rome; imitées fidèlement ... d'après les dessins coloriés par ... Bartoli et autres dessinateurs. Seconde édition . Paris: Didot l'aîné for Molini and Lamy, 1783-1787. 2 volumes. [ Bound with :] l'Abbé Joseph-Jean RIVE (1730-1791). Histoire critique de la pyramide de Caïus Cestius . Paris: Didot l'aîné for Molini and Lamy, 1787. 2 works in one volume (as published), 2° (512 x 340mm). First work paginated: I, pp. [i]-[iv] [1]-73 (pp.[i] half-title, [iii] title, [1]-73 text); II, [i]-[iv] [1]-47 (pp.[i] half-title, [iii] title, [1]-47 text); second work: pp.[i]-[ii] [1]-90 (pp.[i] title, [1]-90 text). 55 engraved plates in 2 states numbered I-LIV and another captioned to be bound in volume II, at p.8, all but one in coloured and plain states, printed in black or bistre, one double-page, one double-page and folding. (Variable light spotting, occasional fingermarking, small marginal inkmark on one plate.) Early 19th-century blue morocco gilt by C. Smith the covers with broad borders formed of foliate and scallop rolls within broad and narrow rules, Botfield arms at centre, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, the flat spine gilt in compartments, lettered in two and at the foot, the others decorated with foliate, floral and other tools, gilt edges, (extremities lightly rubbed). ONE OF 100 COPIES, WITH THE PLATES IN TWO STATES. The first edition of Bartoli's Recueil de peintures antiques trouvées à Rome (Paris: 1757-1760) with descriptions by the comte de Caylus and Pierre-Jean Mariette and Jean-Jacques Barthélemy's Explication de la mosaïque de Palestrine was illustrated with 33 plates and published in an edition of 30 copies. The second, present edition was enlarged by the addition of Rive's Histoire critique de la pyramide de Caïus Cestius , and, according to Brunet, was printed in an edition of 100 copies on paper, 15 on vellum, and 6 on papier de Hollande . Copies of these various issues exist with differing permutations of text and plates (for example, without the half-titles or with 6 duplicate plates in the second work); however, it is rare to find copies with the plates in two states -- of the copies sold at auction since 1975, only one (the Abdy-Peyrefitte copy) has contained the plates in both states. In the present copy, p.67 of the second work is a cancellans. Berlin Katalog 3948; Brunet I, 682; Cicognara 3598; van Praet Bibliothèque du Roi V, 86-87.
