George Barrington, whose real name was Waldron, was an infamous pickpocket sentenced to seven years' transportation in 1790. On his voyage, he prevented the ship's being seized by the convicts and was recommended to the favorable consideration of Governor Philip, who made him superintendent of the convicts. He was the first to receive, in 1792, a certificate of emancipation, and later he rose to be high constable of Paramatta. Much information regarding the indigenous population of New South Wales is provided, particularly regarding their attempts to establish friendly relations with them. Also included is an account of the wounding of Governor Philip by a native spear, and the supposed discovery of the convict Dailey. Ferguson 203.
