BANKSY(British, born 1974) Jack and Jill (Police Kids) 2005 screenprint ed. 288/350 editioned lower right bears P.O.W. Print Making stamp lower right 50 x 70cm PROVENANCE: This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control OTHER NOTES: Few details are known about Banksy himself, although he remains the world's most successful and most sought after street artist. To this day his identity is unknown, refusing to be interviewed to maintain an air of mystery surrounding him - undoubtedly further driving the demand for a piece of the infamous Banksy..Growing up in Bristol, United Kingdom, Banksy turned to the act of graffiti with his first works appearing on trains and streets in the early 1990s. By 2001, his signature stenciled images were across the United Kingdom, and by 2021 across the world. His graffiti pieces are typically created through spray paint and stencils, with a fascinating level of detail to rival the world's best painters. Through his medium, he is able to simplify complex graphics into a universal visual language, often with a combination of political and social statements. His work commonly criticises war, capitalism, and greed often with a humorous or satirical edge which has paved the way for a new definition of contemporary street art. As most of his pieces begin as public artworks, his editions have become the sought after piece of art by Banksy that the world's top collectors now fight over. Each year, and even each month, his record prices are made and then beaten again with auction results making headlines across the globe. In particular, the market for his unsigned editioned prints has risen by over 160% in the last couple of years alone. Artprice reports that Banksy saw almost a 30% increase in overall market value in 2020 alone, with 2021 now holding the top two prices ever for an edition by Banksy the highest price ever is now reported at over $3.1millionAUD). Produced in 2005, Banksy's Jack and Jill (Police Kids) depicts two young children in bullet-proof Police vests. They display the typical childlike innocence you would expect, with smiling faces and skipping feet amongst a bright blue background all reminiscent of the traditional English nursery rhyme. The Police vests appear in stark contrast, tainting the carefree innocence of these two children and pervading the scene with questions of freedom and the impacts of our generation on the next. Banksy's jarring contrast of Jack and Jill with their Police vests could be a comment on how children today are smothered by safety regulations, or perhaps one addressing the need for even greater protection of our precious youth. This mild ambiguity is one of Banksy's classic traits and has made him one of the most discussed contemporary artists of our time. Olivia Fuller Head of Art Estimate $80,000-100,000 Condition: Work is in good condition with no apparent faults to note. There is a light crease to the lower right hand corner, approximately 2mm. Work is floating against a foam core backing. Well framed in a white contemporary frame, measuring 77 x 96cm.
