Bancroft & Company Date: 1864 Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 70x86 cm (27½x33¾") plus decorative border, folding into gilt-lettered blindstamped cloth covers 15.5x10 cm (6¼x4"). First edition of Bancroft's influential, detailed and quite striking pocket map of California and Nevada, with portions of Arizona and Utah. Each state is divided into counties, reflected in the coloring, and the various railroads, completed, under construction and planned, are shown, as are the many towns, cities, lakes, rivers, and other features. There is an advertising leaf for Bancroft on inside of front cover, which includes a short list maps available. Signature in ink on leaf of Woodford Clivens. The first edition of the map is quite scarce. Further Notes from the Files of Warren Heckrotte Provenance: Ross Valley Book Company, 3/84 This is the first issue of this map. The later issues are: 1868; 1871; 1873; 1876; 1878. It is extracted from Bancroft's Map of the Pacific States which appeared in 1863. A small part of eastern Utah is not included and a rather larger part of eastern and southern Arizona is not included; for instance Tucson is missed. Bancroft also issued in 1864 the northern portion of the Map of the Pacific States: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana. I also have 1873 and 1876 issues.
