Davis, / Collector at Detroit. / by the / Revenue Officers in his District. / in token of / their gratitude and esteem. / April 1861. The service includes a large handled platter, coffee pot, two tea pots, and a covered urn, with some pieces having an attached medallion for Bancroft, Redfield, and Rice. Robert W. Davis served as Collector of the Custom House Department in Detroit in 1861. Prior to that, he is listed as a U.S. Marshal in 1858. Judge Ross Wilkins wrote of Davis in a letter to James Buchanan dated March 30, 1858 Condition: Damage to three of the feet causing them to be warped.
