Ball Signed By Four "Project Mercury" Astronauts Incl. Gus Grissom (D. 1967) This ONL (Giles) ball has been signed by four members of NASA's Project Mercury. The first human spaceflight program of the United States, Project Mercury ran from 1959 through 1963 with the goal of putting a man in orbit around the Earth. The ball is like new with the following signatures occupying three different panels; Alan Shepard, the first American in space and commander of the Apollo 14 mission; Gus Grissom, the second American to fly in space and the first person to fly in space twice. He was killed during a training exercise for the Apollo One mission on January 27, 1967; Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the earth and fourth American in space; and Wally Schirra, the only man to fly in all of America's first three space programs (Mercury, Gemini and Apollo). He logged a total of 295 hours and 15 minutes in space. Each of the signatures from these early NASA pioneers have been signed in bold blue ink. LOA from PSA/DNA.
