BALDASSARRE FRANCESCHINI CALLED 'IL VOLTERRANO' (VOLTERRA 1611 - 1689 FLORENCE) Study for a putto inscribed on the recto Del Volterrano (lower right) black chalk on paper 240 x 194 mm A major draughtsman of the Italian Baroque, Baldassare Franceschini (‘il Volterrano’) was greatly praised by his biographers, Baldinucci and Gabburri, who also collected his drawings. The present sheet may indeed be an initial compositional sketch for a putto in the over-door of a fresco in the Palazzo Della Gherardesca in Florence (see Antichita Viva, Anno XXXII, no. 6, Nov-Dec., 1993). In 1973, Ewald Gerhard noted that Volterrano worked on several occasions for the Della Gheradesca family. A comparable drawing by Volterrano is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. no 1980.41.1.b.).
