FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author on endpaper: "Miss Elisabeth McClellan with the compliments of the author." Balch's attempt to present the facts in the Peary-Cook debate. Peary and Cook clashed over who had been the first to reach the North Pole-Balch here sides with Cook, although the courts and public opinion at the time did not.
