Beschreibung:

* BAINES, Thomas (1822-1875). Explorations in South-West Africa. Being an account of a journey in the years 1861 and 1862 from Walvisch Bay, on the western coast, to Lake Ngami and the Victoria Falls. London: Longman, Green, et al, 1864. 8vo (203 x 137 mm). Chromolithographed frontispiece, 3 folding engraved maps outlined in color, 8 wood-engraved plates. Publisher's blind-stamped green cloth gilt (head of spine expertly repaired). FIRST EDITION. Baines first travelled in Africa 1845 and from 1847-51 was artist to the British army expedition to the Cape. In 1855 he was appointed artist to the British expedition to N. W. Australia and returned to Africa in 1857 to joint Livingstone's note entirely successful Zambezi expedition. On this 1861 expedition he was accompanied by the ivory trader James Chapman and together they refined Livingstone's explorations, pioneering a route across the Kalahari to the Victoria Falls from Bechuanaland and Lake Ngami, and establishing a new trade route with the Zambezi. It was on this expedition that he completed his now famous paintings and views of the Falls -- all of which are reproduced in this work -- the first by a European artist. Czech, p. 9. Estimate $1,000-1,500
