BACON, Francis, Sir (1561-1626). Document signed ("Fr. B. C.S") as Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, an injunction granted in the Court of Chancery in the case of Henry Rosewell Esq. (defendant) and William Every Esq. (plaintiff), n.p. 18 March, 14 James 1st [1616/1617]. 1 page (8¼ x 13¼ in.), on parchment, in Latin, 21 lines, written in ink in a small gothic court hand, first line with ornate strapwork intital capital "J" and ("Jacobus"), round wax seal of the Court of Chancery in amber wax pendant at lower right (seal chipped, stains in extreme right-hand portion from seal, slightly affecting several words). Verso with latin endorsement "Per dominum custodem magni sigilli Anglia"; below, in a fine cursive hand is Bacon's signature, followed by the initials "C.S." ("Custos sigilli"), denoting his office. Enclosed in a red morocco gilt custom padded box. SIGNED BY BACON AS KEEPER OF THE GREAT SEAL OF ENGLAND. An unusual form of Bacon's signature, rare in any form. Bacon had been appointed Keeper of the Great Seal only 11 days previously, succeeding Lord Ellesmere on 7 March. Nine months later, on 7 January 1617/18, he was named Lord Chancelor.
