BACKHOUSE, James (1794-1869). A Narrative of a Visit to The Mauritius and South Africa , London: Hamilton, Adams and Co., 1844. 8° (220 x 140mm). 16 etched plates including frontispiece after Backhouse and George Washington Walker, on india paper, mounted, wood-engraved text illustrations, 2 folding maps. (Occasional light staining.) Original green cloth (extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION OF BACKHOUSE'S NARRATIVE WITH FINE IMPRESSIONS ON INDIA PAPER. Backhouse, a naturalist and Quaker, journeyed through the Australian and African colonies between 1832 and 1841, with fellow Quaker George Washington Walker. Backhouse was driven by his 'initiative, imagination and adventurous spirit, and admired for his sense of humour and straightforward simplicity'. Toussaint, D 80. With a lithograph by Lieutenant Arthur Taylor entitled "Ascent of the Peter Booth Mauritius; christened September 7th 1832 King William's Peak!" (597 x 400mm). (2)
