Backhouse, a naturalist and Quaker, journeyed through the Australian and African colonies between 1832 and 1841, with fellow Quaker George Washington Walker. Backhouse was driven by his 'initiative, imagination and adventurous spirit, and admired for his sense of humour and straightforward simplicity'. Toussaint, D 80.
