BACKHOUSE, James (1794-1869). A Narrative of a Visit to the Mauritius and South Africa , London: Hamilton, Adams & Co, 1844. 8° (221 x 140 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 15 engraved plates and 2 folding engraved maps, woodcut illustrations in text (some light browning, one gathering loose). Original blindstamped cloth (new endpapers). FIRST EDITION. The book is in the form of a diary, and the author seems to have traversed every part of South Africa where there was a Mission Station or a missionary. In this way he appears to have met almost every prominent man connected with Mission work in South Africa at this time. Mendelssohn Vol. 1, p.62. THOMPSON, George (d.1893). Travels and Adventures in Southern Africa , London, Henry Colburn, 1827. 8° (210 x 129 mm). 25 engraved and aquatint plates and maps, 4 folding, woodcut illustrations in text, advertisement leaf at end of vol. II (inner margins repaired, some spotting and offsetting). Modern half calf. Second edition. Abbey Travel 330; Mendelssohn Vol 2, p. 493: "A valuable work". (2)
