AYRES, Philip (1638-1712). Cupids addresse to the Ladies. Emblemata amatoria. Emblems of love. Embleme d'amore. Emblemes d'amour , London: R. Bently and S. Tidmarch, 1683. Small 8° (159 x 100mm.), engraved throughout with title, 44 emblems, and verses in Latin, English, Italian and French (a few outer margins very lightly browned or thumb-soiled), 18th-century panelled calf gilt, sides with central floral motif, repeated in each compartment on spine, marbled edges (lightly rubbed, a few marks on rear cover). FIRST EDITION. The illustrations, and the Latin and Italian verses, were taken from Otto van Veen's Amorum emblemata ; the common attribution to Francis Barlow is questioned by Hodnett. Lowndes I, 90; Praz p. 15: "scarce"; Wing A4307.
