AVIGNON 1622 - [GELLIOT, Annibal and/or Thomas de BERTON.] La voye de laict, ou le chemin des Heros au Palais de la Gloire. Ouvert A l'entrée triomphante de Louys XIII. Roy de France & de Navarre en la Cité d'Avignon le 16. de Novembre 1622 . Avignon: Jacques Bramereau, 1623.
AVIGNON 1622 - [GELLIOT, Annibal and/or Thomas de BERTON.] La voye de laict, ou le chemin des Heros au Palais de la Gloire. Ouvert A l'entrée triomphante de Louys XIII. Roy de France & de Navarre en la Cité d'Avignon le 16. de Novembre 1622 . Avignon: Jacques Bramereau, 1623. 4 o (203 x 143 mm). Allegorical frontispiece, portrait of King Louis XIII, 8 folded plates etched by the Portuguese artist, LUIZ PALMA. (Small puncture in one plate, short tear in the fold of several.) Contemporary limp vellum (somewhat stained). Provenance : Claude Comiers perhaps the blind mathematician and occultist, d. 1693 (two inscriptions on frontispiece). The most complete and illustrated report on the celebrated entry into Avignon of LOUIS XIII (1601-43), King of France, on 16 November 1622. There is no concensus on its authorship. On the political implications of the event, connected to the King's provincial and provençal campaigns against the Huguenots and Avignon's continued Papal presence vis-à-vis the Bourbons, see Marie-Claude Canova-Green, "Révolte et Imaginaire: le voyage de Louis XIII en Provence (1622)", in: Dix-septième siècle (2003) 3, pp. 429-39. The etchings are the only known work of Luiz Palma, who identifies himself as Portuguese every time he signs. He was a graphic artist of some originality, whose needle shows considerable freedom in style. The plates reproduce the specially built and decorated Tribune of Speeches, the Gate of Felicity, the Royal Equestrian Statue, the Trophy of Wisdom, the Fountain of Justice, the Theater of Force and Piety, the Palace of Glory, and the entrance constructed for the Cathedral of Notre Dame des Doms. FINE COPY. Brunet Suppl. II, 934; Ruggieri 426-7; Thieme-Becker XXVI, 178; Vinet 485; Watanabe 1770.
