Contemporary dark blue half morocco gilt, original wrappers bound in, top edge gilt (extremities scuffed). LIMITED EDITION number 191 of 100 on "vélin français" paper, of a total edition of 250. Henri (James) de Rothschild (1871-1946) was the son of Baron James whose collection of French literature, presented to the Bibliothèque Nationale, constitutes one of its principal treasures. Baron Henri collected autographs on a similar scale - was it his intention to create a supplement to his father's collection? - and like him, presented it to the same library where it is known as the "Donation Rothschild." Gaucheron, the author of this scholarly catalogue, was a diplomat who ended his career as French ambassador to Venezuela; this appears to be his only major work of scholarship. This is the second of the luxuriously produced catalogues of Mrs. Whitney Hoff's collections, of considerable use, as it reproduces numerous autographs, of which facsimiles are found nowhere else. The principal compiler appears to have been Cornuau who signed the introduction. (2)
