Joining as a lieutenant in the upper crust Boston regiment organized by Senator Henry Wilson Tilton was later wounded and captured at Gaines Mill. At Gettysburg, Tilton commanded the 1st Brigade of Barnes' Division in the V Corps. Tilton received a rare wartime brevet before mustering out of service in October 1864.
