The quotation in pencil, five bars in one system of three staves for flutes and strings, the inscription in red ink, on one leaf, approx. 125 x 205mm; the photograph approx. 180 x 130mm. Framed and glazed. A signed quotation from Agon. The ballet's unusually long gestation between 1953 and 1957 covered the transition in Stravinsky's compositional style from diatonic to twelve-tone. The title, which Stravinsky characteristically lettered, as here, in Greek capitals, translates as 'contest' or 'struggle'. The recipient may be Jay Michael Barrie (1912-2001), personal secretary to Stravinsky's friend Gerald Heard.
