Autograph letter signed (“J Smeaton”), to “Honoured Sir”, regretting that he is too exhausted to undertake his commission, but recommending instead John Rennie who should contact his assistant William Jessup (“...I have recommended Mr Rennie to meet Mr Jessop on the Lincoln affair He is very Ingenious, and well informed; but as You know him I cannot Say more than that I doubt not but he will give full satisfaction wherever he engages. My Letter, was wrote in the Sincerity of my heart. I am in reality quite knocked up; and that without a speedy respite from anxiety that public business causes in my mind, either my life or my understanding must be the forfeit...”) and complaining that “I cannot do 1/10th of the Business I used to be capable of, nor 1/20th of what is attempted to be laid upon me”, one page, folio, guard, Gray´s Inn, 19 September 1791 SMEATON RECOMMENDS THE ‘VERY INGENIOUS´ JOHN RENNIE True to the prediction contained in this letter, Smeaton died exhausted by overwork a year later, on 28 October 1792.
