Autograph letter signed by Sir Joseph Banks (“Jos. Banks”) to William Herschel offering him a gift of a pair of old shoes, saying: “I should not have ventured to send so whimsical and so unusual a present had it not occurred to me in the short walk we had this morning that the construction as well as the materials of them might be usefull”, concluding the letter by saying: “I shall consider them as having proved as many millions of times more usefull to you than they ever could have been to me as the number of cubic inches you will by that means gain into the power of your amazing telescopes”, two pages, address leaf to ‘Mr. Herschel, Datchet, near Windsor’, folding creases, some browning to blank leaf, small tear to lower corner of blank leaf, mounted on card at vertical centre fold, Spring Grove, 30 December 1783. *** “THE POWER OF YOUR AMAZING TELESCOPES”. Naturalist and botanist Sir Joseph Banks writes to William Herschel offering him a gift of a pair of old shoes, hoping they will assist the astronomer in his work. At this time, in 1783, Herschel was working intensively on surveys in search of ‘deep sky’, his findings later being published in three works, beginning with the Catalogue of One Thousand New Nebulae and Clusters of Stars in 1786.
