Title: Autograph Letter Signed by Mark Twain as S[amuel] L[anghorne] Clemens, to his English publisher Author: Twain, Mark Place: Hartford Publisher: Date: March 10, 1890 Description: 23 lines, in ink. On single sheet of paper 21x14 cm. (8¼x5½). Clemens writes to his publisher in London, Andrew Chatto, about his works being translated into Italian, providing insight into both his relationship with Chatto and his feelings about some of his early writings: "Dear Mr. Chatto, Mr. Romasso has made translations of some of my sketches, and wishes to publish them in Italy, but I necessarily refer him to you, because the authority to grant or withhold permission rests solely with you. But in any case, to send him your editions of my several books & charge to my account, for I would rather he should read my modern works than my ancient ones. Don't send him anything earlier than the 'Gilded Age.' The sketches which he mentions to me are heavy antiquities, & I had forgotten that they existed. Sincerely yours, SL Clemens." Lot Amendments Condition: Archival mounting tape on verso along left edge, ½" split along one fold; very good or better. Item number: 211849
