Butler, Esquire to receive all payments from Oliver Kane, Esq. for me & to make any arrangement in relation the pecuniary affairs between Mr. Kane and myself which he Mr. Butler may think proper." On the verso and on an additional leaf Butler has penned and signed receipts for money collected from Kane on behalf of Van Buren for payment on a mortgage. In 1829 Van Buren was serving as Secretary of State in the administration of Andrew Jackson Van Buren would go on to serve as Jackson's Vice President and be elected President in 1836.
