A collection of letters and manuscripts, 19th Century, the correspondents including QUEEN CAROLINE (consort of George IV, to Mrs Falconnet, 1 August 1820, requesting her to give evidence at her trial), Jean-Baptiste BERNADOTTE (letter signed to the 'Directoire Executif de la République Cisalpine', Braunau, 17 April 1798, recounting the mob attack upon the French embassy in Vienna provoked by his display of a tricolour flag, 'Toutes les fenêtres ont été brisées; le drapeau tricolore a été arraché ... Retranchés le sabre à la main ... nous attendions la mort, mais une mort digne de Républicains Français', 4 pages, folio ), Benjamin DISRAELI (autograph letter signed, 29 January [1835], responding to a threat to default him from the Westminster [i.e. Reform] Club, affirming 'I never entered the walls of the Clubhouse but once in my life ...' and satirically alleging that 'the conveniences were daily used by individuals who were not members of the Club' and that therefore 'the projected Club had degenerated into a Coffeehouse', 4 pages, 4to ), Thomas CARLYLE (autograph letter signed, 3 November 1849, 6 pages, 8vo ), George Meredith (1888), Mary Russell Mitford (1841), George Canning (1815), Lord Brougham (in French, 1835), and Emperor Ferdinand I (printed document signed, 1843), 9 items in total.
