Woodcut title decoration, head- and tailpieces, initials. Errata leaf bound in at end with revised text of act II, scene xx. (A little browned, some dampstaining, 3 plates light impressions, all plates laid down, some with tears, 2 detached.) Contemporary limp vellum gilt, covers with central gilt lozenges formed of foliate tools within double gilt fillet borders, spine decorated with gilt fleurons, leather ties (a little marked and cockled, ties worn with some losses). Provenance : Teresa Golzio (inscription on flyleaf, and second inscripion on rear free endpaper 'di Teresa Golzio figlia di Mad a Golzio Piacenzini'). FIRST EDITION. AURELI AND SABADINI'S RARE COURT OPERATIC SPECTACLE AND A HIGHPOINT OF THE SERIES THAT 'RAISED [THOSE OF THE COURT OF PARMA ...] TO A LEVEL COMPETITIVE WITH THAT OF THE MAJOR ITALIAN THEATRE CITIES' ( New Grove XVI, p.362). Il Favore de gli dei is the work of a talented production team assembled by Ranuccio II to create court operatic spectacles; it was composed of Aureli (the court poet from 1687 to 1694) and Sabadini (court composer from 1686 to 1700), supported by Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena- Federico Crivelli and Gasparo Torelli in the respective roles of scenographer, choreographer and costume designer. As Grove notes, the highpoint of [the production team's work...] was the festivities for the marriage of Odoardo II Farnese and Dorothea Sophia of Neuburg-Pfalz in 1690. These Olympian and sumptuous spectacles [which included the present work] reaped European fame for the Bibiena family' ( op. cit , XVI, pp. 362-363).
