AUGUSTINUS, AURELIUS, Saint . De civitate Dei [ Italian ]. De la cita di dio. [Venice: Antonio di Bartolommeo (Miscomini), about 1476-1478]. Folio, 280 x 194mm. (11 x 7 9/16in.). 323 leaves (of 324, without the final blank), with signatures. Type: 4:78R. 47 lines. Double column. Spaces for initials. Headlines (book numbers) and a few guide lettters supplied in ink. Nineteenth-century diced russia, covers with gilt and blind roll-tooled borders surrounding central blind-embossed panel gilt-lettered at center, chased brass corner-pieces and clasps, edges stained green, rebacked, joints cracked, loss of leather to head and tail of spine, tiny worm track to gutter of quire g, just touching the text of fols. g8 and g9, short marginal tear to fol. n2, small inkstain to a4, partly obscuring a word, mostly marginal dampstaining with some spotting from fungus, scattered light mostly marginal foxing . FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN. HC 2071*; Proctor 6145; BMC VII, 1136; GW 2892; Goff A-1248. Mis-assigned to Florence, early 1480's, by Proctor and GW, but certainly printed by Miscomini in Venice and therefore belonging to the period of his documented activity there, 1476-1478; by 1480 Miscomini had removed to Nonantola, from where he migrated to Florence (see T. Accurti, Editiones seculi XV ignotae , Florence, 1940, pp. 145-6, correcting GW; see also BMC VI, xv, and R. Ridolfi, Le filigrane dei paleotipi , Florence, 1957, pp. 16-17).
