AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES and Rev . JOHN BACHMAN. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. New York: J.J. Audubon 1845-48. 3 vols. bound in 2, atlas folio, 680 x 520mm. (26 13/16 x 20 1/2in.), on guards, dark green morocco gilt, g.e., by Stikeman, edges badly worn. Plate 138 with 16-inch tear, plate 149 torn along caption, plates 2, 16 and 78 with tears into subject or caption, plate 97 extended at top, plate 68 with numerals lost, plate 71 with a blank corner lost and renewed. Thirteen other plates with smaller tears; nearly all of the defects with old repairs. First volume with some abrasion and thin spots (removal of stamp?) affecting plates 2, 15, 19, 20, 25 and 66 (plates 19 and 66 each with a small hole). Slight and very occasional foxing. Lacks title to vol. 3, title of vol. 1 with 8-inch repaired tear, vol. 3 contents leaf severely creased. Lacks text volumes. FIRST EDITION. 150 finely colored lithographed plates after John James and John Woodhouse Audubon the backgrounds after Victor Audubon, by J.T.
