Beschreibung:

Attributed to Sir George Bulteel Fisher (1764-1834), Assorted rural views to include the Galty Mountains, Co. Tipperary, Ireland and another painted on the reverse of a cut down hand-coloured aquatint by J.W. Edy after the artist of The Falls of Niagara, North America, all unsigned, some titled and attributed on verso, unframed, watercolour and pencil, various sizes 49 x 69cm.; 19.25 x 27.25in (3). * A landscape and shipping painter who was a pupil of Paul Sandby at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. He served in the Royal Artillery in the Peninsula and in Canada and at the end of his life was Commandant at Woolwich. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1780 to 1808 and a number of engravings were made from his views from about 1790. Fisher was an accomplished amateur artist in oil and water-colour who had the advantage of social contacts with professional artists, among whom were Constable, Farington, and possibly John Downman and Francis Towne His penchant for lecturing about art impressed at least one subordinate officer in Portugal but failed to endear him to Constable, who confessed to being tired of going to school. Ten years earlier, however, Constable had praised Fisher's North American drawings, and Fisher's importance to Canada is undoubtedly this artistic legacy.
