Attributed to Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger (Dutch, 1601-1653) Vessels in Rough Seas off the Dutch Coast Unsigned, marked with an unknown emblem and dated "1628" on the floating barrel l.r. Oil on panel, 19 1/4 x 29 1/8 in. (48.8 x 74.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, fine craquelure, scattered minor paint losses, surface grime. Provenance: Art dealer J. Denijs, Amsterdam (1942), art dealer Harry Katz, The Hague (1961), art dealer J.R. Bier, Haarlem, as Simon de Vlieger (1962), Private Collection, Switzerland (1968), Kunsthandel Mr. H. Schlichte Bergen, Amsterdam, as Simon de Vlieger (1970), through to the current owner. Exhibitions: Tentoonstelling van hollandse 17e eeuwse meesters J.R. Bier, Haarlem, 1962 , no. 27, ill. as Simon de Vlieger; Kunsthandelaar en verzamelaar, Kunsthändler und Sammler Amsterdams Historisch Museum, Amsterdam, March 27-May 31, 1970, no. 63, ill. p. 117 as Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger. N.B. The painting at hand has been attributed over the years to Simon de Vlieger or Jan Porcellis Digital images were reviewed by the RKD, but they were unable to firmly attribute the work to a specific artist. At the current time the RKD describes the painting in their archives as Circle of Jan Porcellis
