English, late 18th-early 19th century. Oil on canvas, housed in a gilt frame. A portrait of a man identified as Lord Whitworth on a plaque affixed to the frame, unsigned; 28.25 x 23.5 in (sight), 36.75 x 31.75 in. (frame). William McKay's catalogue raisonne of John Hoppner's work mentions a portrait of Lord Whitworth, but the description does not match the present portrait, as it describes a "three-quarter figure, black coat with star of an order on breast, white scarf; red background." The portrait offered here depicts a sitter without a star on his breast and against a dark ground. Additionally, according to both the raisonne and the National Portrait Gallery, the known Whitworth portrait is on display at Knole House, England. It is unclear whether this portrait was done by the hand of Hoppner, or is a copy, in his manner. This portrait was exhibited at the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in 1944. Provenance:From the property of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, Richmond, Indiana; Ex Collection of Robert W. Lyons, son of Dr. Samuel R. Lyons, pastor of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church from 1901 to 1915, and donated to the church in 1944; Acquired from Newhouse Gallery, N. Y. Condition: Relined canvas.
