DescriptionStill-life Paintings from the Collection of Dr Sam Segal
Attributed to Johannes BaersActive in Utrecht 1624 - in or after 1641Still life of flowers with an iris in a glass vase, placed in a niche
oil on oak panelunframed: 46 x 34 cm.; 18⅛ x 13⅜ in.framed: 61.5 x 49.4 cm; 24¼ x 19⅜ in.Condition reportThe panel is uncradled, in a stable condition and bears a slight bow. The reverse of the panel bears several small support batons concentrated in the top left corner and bottom centre and left corners. A small repaired crack is visible on the paint surface in the top left hand side (corresponding to the above). The paint surface is clean and is under a modern glossy varnish. The paint surface is generally in a good condition, and bears slight signs of abrasion in the background and in the darks. The details of the flowers are generally well preserved. There seems to be an old repaired scratch along the top edge measuring approximately 8cm across, only visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows minor campaigns of restoration alonged the cracked edge (as highlighted above) and in the background in the lower right. Apart from these, very few retouchings are visible which might be a sign that a modern masking varnish has been used. The work is in a good condition. The painting is offered in an ebony style frame.
