Beschreibung:

ATTRIBUTED TO EDOUARD LIEVRE: A FINE 19TH CENTURY GILT BRONZE FLOOR STANDING LAMP the extremely fine Japonisme style lamp base possibly cast by Barbedienne after a design by Lievre, the adjustable stem surmounted by a pierced floral oil lamp reservoir, on a tripod stand with lambrequin mounts and dragon handles, with a pierced circular stretcher centred by a bird, the ornate feet terminating in a distinctive oriental style cartouches, 170cm high when fully extended This 'Japonisme' torchère appears to be after a design by Edouard Lièvre based on its stylistic similarity to other bronze works of art that feature similar pierced foliage, mythological beasts and scrolling mounts. The pierced foliate decoration to the lower section of the oil lamp is reminiscent of the layered decoration found on the Persian Vase made by Barbedienne after a design by Edouard Lièvre and exhibited in the Paris 1878 Universal Exhibition. The distinctive mounts used at the base of this lamp are directly comparable to those used on the 'Armoire Japonisante' signed by Edouard Lièvre and today in a private collection. (D. Alcouffe, Connaissance des Arts, Edouard Lièvre Paris, 2004, no. 228, pp. 10 and 11). The weaved ornament apparent in the present lot can also be seen on a Japonisme table by Lievre shown in the above publication (p.31).
