[Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1649 or later]. 2 o (534 x 338 mm). 153 (of 160) engraved maps (lacking the world map and the maps of North America), French manuscript index COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND (some maps with light chipping and splitting to edges, some with old repairs on verso, map 67 cut and laid down, map 72 torn along fold, maps 134 and 139 reinforced along folds). Contemporary vellum (some soiling and wear). Provenance : Ida Block (coat-of-arms pasted over imprint on engraved title page); I.N. Phelps Stokes, by descent to the present owner. This collection of maps was presumably commissioned by Ida Block. The title page is that for the Dutch edition of Willem and Jan Blaeu Toonneel des aerdriicx, oste Nieuwe Atlas, dat is Beschryving van alle Landen nu nieulycx uytgegeven" and Koenenman Bl 29C states that "although the engraved text of the title pages shows 1649 as the year of publication, this volume has definitively been produced in 1658, as the printed date on the slip on the second title-page shows." The atlas was presumably compiled shortly after that date. Many subjects are represented with three maps by different cartographers. Sold as a collection of maps, not subject to return.
