ATHENAEUS. Dipnosophistarum, hoc est ergutè scitéq[ue] in conuiuio differentum lib. XV , text in Greek, Basle: Joannes Walder, September 1535. 2°, printer's device on title and verso of last page, woodcut initials, with final blank (margins lightly waterstained throughout), late 16th/early 17th-century vellum (lacking ties, somewhat darkened). Provenance : inscription in Latin: this book was given by Abraham Whelocke to John Barnes, and ownership inscription of Johannes Chanetus (dated 24 January 1624) on front endpaper. Second Greek edition. Adams A2097. Athenaeus' work is considered to be the earliest known text on cookery, but it also contains miscellaneous information on music, songs, dances, games, and courtesans.
