Le Verrier was able to deduce that the planet's deviations from its seemingly proper course could only be the result of the force of another unseen and unknown planet, whose exact size and position he calculated on 31 August 1846. His findings were published in the Comptes rendus of the Acadmie des Sciences over the course of 1845-46.
