ASTRONOMY]. STRUVE, Friedrich Georg Wilhelm (1793-1864). tudes d'astronomie stellaire. Sur la Voie Lacte et sur la distance des toiles fixes . St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1847. 8 o . (Some browning and spotting throughout). 19th-century black morocco (extremities worn). FIRST EDITION. During his research at the Russian observatories in Dorpat and Pulkovo, Struve observed double stars, planets and other members of solar systems, geodectic measurement and the determination of stellar parallaxes and the distribution of stars in space. In this work, he confirmed Olbers's hypothesis that interstellar space is not completely empty and transparent and determined the valuation of the obscuration effect in outer space. Norman 2030. -- BESSEL, Friedrich Wilhelm (1784-1846). Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno MDCCLV deducta ex observationibus viri incomparabilis James Bradley .. Knigsberg: Friedrich Nicolovius, 1818. 2 o (346 x 205 mm). (Scattered light foxing.) Modern three qaurter morocco antique, uncut. FIRST EDITION. "Constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel's work, Bradley's observations were made the beginning of modern astrometry" (DSB). Houzeau & Lancaster 10117; Norman 226. -- CARRINGTON, Richard Christopher (1826-1875). Observations of the Spots on the Sun from November 9, 1853, to March 24, 1861, made at Redhill . London: Williams and Norgate, 1863. 4 o (323 x 251 mm). 168 lithographed plates, after the author's solar charts. Original blindstamped cloth, spine gilt lettered (rebacked, original spine laid down). Provenance : Radcliffe Observatory, Oxford (presentation inscription by the author: "With the Author's compts" on title and small ink stamp on front paste-down). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. Carrington "determined the position of the sun's axis with unprecedented accuracy and established the important empirical laws of sunspot distribution and the variation in solar rotation as functions of the heliocentric latitude, which served to revolutionize ideas on solar physics just as effectively as the results of spectrum analysis" (DSB). Norman 407. -- LE VERRIER. Recherches sur les mouvements de la plante Herschel . Paris: Bachelier, 1846. 8 o . Gathering 3 (pp. 33-46) misbound between gatherings 5 and 6; Original blue printed wrappers, uncut (rebacked), modern blue cloth case. Second edition, first edition in book form. The results of Le Verrier's investigation of the seemingly erratic movements of Uranus. Le Verrier was able to deduce that the planet's deviations from its seemingly proper course could only be the result of the force of another unseen and unknown planet, whose exact size and position he calculated on 31 August 1846. His findings were published in the Comptes rendus of the Acadmie des Sciences over the course of 1845-46. Meanwhile, an English astronomer, Adams (see lot 884) had independently arrived at the same conclusion and informed the Astronomer Royal, George Biddell Airy in 1845, but neither Airy nor Adams had proceeded to publish these findings. Norman 1343. -- LEY, Willy (b. 1906), editor. Die Mglichkeit der Weltraumfahrt . Leipzig: Hachmeister & Thalin, 1928. 8 o . Numerous text illustrations, 2 half-tone plates. Original brown cloth, front cover and spine stamped in black. first edition. Ley was only 22 when he published this compilation of works by members of the "Verein fr Raumschiffart" (Society for Space Travel), known in the English speaking world as the "German Rocket Society". Norman 1344. -- VERNE, Jules (1828-1905). Les voyages extraordinaires. De la terre a la lune. Trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes . Paris: J. Hetzel [1868]. 4 o . Numerous text illustrations. Edges gilt. Quarter morocco gilt, brown cloth boards with gilt laurel wreath and "cole Casimir Delavigne Havre" on front cover. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. First edition published in 1865.
