ASCENSION, in an initial U on a leaf from a Gradual, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
ASCENSION, in an initial U on a leaf from a Gradual, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Regensburg, 1290s] 503 x 340mm, leaf; 122 x 101mm initial. The Virgin and apostles sit on the bare rocks and look up towards the angels and the disappearing figure of Christ, whose feet have left strong imprints on the mountain top, the straight stave of the initial is pink and is being swallowed by a grey dragon whose body curls round to form the rest of the U, initial and scene are set against a ground of burnished gold and the whole is framed in two shades of green; there are sewing holes along the top edge of the initial from a cloth guard; nine four-line staves in red with square neumes above nine lines of text written in black ink in a large gothic bookhand on nine horizontals ruled in red, justification: 370 x 244mm; foliation cxxi in outer margin, rubrics in red, calligraphic initials in black and red, large initials with blue or red staves with penwork of the contrasting color (slight creasing and soiling not affecting initial). This initial opens the Introit Viri galylei for Mass on the feast of the Ascension of Christ and would have come from the Temporal section of a Gradual. Another leaf from the same Gradual, alongside a leaf from a companion volume, was offered at Christie's, London 11 December 2002, Manuscript Illuminations from the Bernard H. Breslauer Collection , lots 3 and 2. The present leaf had been included with a Nativity, Pentecost, Entry into Jerusalem and St Peter freed from prison in Katalog XIX of Gilhofer and Ranschberg, Lucerne (n.d.). The original series of manuscripts was clearly a luxurious commission and it has been suggested that it was made for the convent of Dominican nuns at Regensberg, founded in 1237 and dedicated to the Holy Cross. For the style of illumination, the involved drapery and broad-faced figures with very pink cheeks, see the Golden Legend made for the monastery of St Emmeran in Regensberg dated 1295: F. Mütherich and K. Dachs, Regensberger Buchmalerei, von frühkarolingischer Zeit bis zum Anfang des Mittelalters, 1987, no 69.
